PENCIL SHARPENER
Sculpture Box Study (Completed July 2002)

The theme for this project was to study a real life object, recreating it to scale, paying careful attention to detail. A regular metallic red pencil sharpener was chosen. (Model: MOR NR201 - MADE IN GERMANY).

A 5kg block of mixed sculpting clay allowed for a scaling up of a factor of 9.

The shaft of the sharpener cones through the center of the piece, resulting in very tight cavities which made hollowing the piece out a tricky process. In addition the sculpture was made into a box, allowing it to have a 'lid'. As a result the inside recesses of the sculpture can be seen when opened.

A particularly hot firing on a wintry Saturday afternoon, saw the piece's surface treatment crackle and luster. The insides reveal an unusual green and yellow swirl, while the outside is a matt smoked finish juxtaposed with lustrous white rakoo crackle, while a green blade boldly slices the vertical.
